Supporting Nasra Wehelie for Assembly District 80

I believe it’s important that Verona knows about our State Assembly redistricting, and about an amazing candidate for Assembly who I believe should be representing Verona as part of the new District-80.

I’m a volunteer canvasser in Verona. I’m not selling roofs, or lawn treatments. I knock doors to let folks know about upcoming elections and to take notes on residents’ preferences and issues. I make sure they know where their polling place is, and who I support in the upcoming elections.

I’ve walked nearly every street in Verona. I’ve bothered your dog, I’ve complimented your flower boxes, or your clever doormat. “Doorbell Broken, Just Yell,” is a favorite of mine. I’ve carefully stepped around your kiddos’ chalk drawings, and taken a break in the shade of your maple tree. I’ve met a lot of you, and I want to introduce you to my friend, Nasra.

Nasra Wehelie is already known in Madison as an Alder and active community leader for women and minorities, being a member of many youth and charity boards over the years. But I want to introduce her as a neighbor in Verona.

We both signed up to canvas together recently. As we were reviewing the neighborhoods that we were going to walk that day she told me her story, as a Muslim immigrant from Somalia, a mother, and a candidate for Assembly who is passionate about the issues that I, and a lot of Verona, care about.

She’s for affordable and accessible housing, women’s health, and LGBTQ+ rights and resources. It was gratifying to hear that she, like me, cares about the specific needs of the incarcerated in prison and when returning to the community. It was a great talk. I felt really involved, she was truly listening.

In that conversation, she earned my vote. If you’re a resident of Verona, Madison, Cross Plains or Middleton, if you’re black, an immigrant, a refugee, part of the LGBTQ+ community, Nasra will have your voice at the Assembly. Please give her a chance to earn your vote too.

I’m hoping to get back out there with her and knock some more doors, and have a conversation with you about how Nasra is a new name in our new district for the next era of the Wisconsin Assembly. The Primary vote is August 13th. See you at the polls!
